All Colour images should be colour separated using the correct icc profile.
Advertisements must be supplied in PDF format.
Please ensure the Acrobat distiller settings are as follows:- PDFX-1a (2001) Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) This is a standard option in most major design applications and helps ensure problem-free output.
The PDF must be made to the exact size of the advert space booked.
DO NOT include White Space, Registration Marks, Colour Bars or other furniture.
Colour Images should be in the CMYK colour space (NOT RGB, Indexed colour, Patterned or Lab colour space)
Monochrome (Black & White) Adverts should be Greyscale and NOT RGB or any other Colour space.
The maximum ink weight on all newsprint products is 240%.
The minimum ink weight visible on magazine products is 5% per colour channel.
4-colour type should not be used smaller than 10 point.
Tinted single-colour type should not be smaller than 8 point.
Single colour solid type no smaller than 6 point.
White out of colour type no smaller than 10 point.
4-colour lines no finer than 1.5 point.
Single colour tinted lines no finer than 1 point.
Single colour solid line no finer than 1 point.
White line out of colour, no finer than 1.5 point.
Be aware of your overprint settings.
White text set to overprint will NOT appear, (even if it does Look correct on screen and prints out on your laser printer) Yellow text set to overprint a Magenta panel will be RED, therefore Knockout settings should be used if Yellow text is the result expected in print.
View your PDF in Acrobat Professional and use the Overprint Preview to check.
Spot Colours and Pantone colours MUST NOT be used anywhere in the document, you must convert all these colours to Process.
View your PDF in Adobe Acrobat and use the menu Separation Preview to check.
If there are any channels, other than C,M,Y or K it will need to be corrected before uploading.
All Spot Colour Advertisements should be separated SPOT AS PROCESS i.e. for a Spot Red Advert there should be a Black channel separation, the Magenta and Yellow separations should be IDENTICAL, and the Cyan channel should be empty (Blank) Outline any font that does not embedding.
Ensure only 1 page is in the PDF (i.e. No Multi-Page Documents) RESOLUTION The Newspapers are printed with a final screen ruling of 100 lines per inch. Therefore the absolute minimum resolution for scanning Photographs, both Colour and Monochrome, is 150 Lines per inch, at the final size of the image.
Most experienced repro suppliers keep to a standard 304 lines per inch, which serves their magazine quality output if ever they need to re-purpose the original RGB scan.
Line art scans should be at least 600dpi for Logos etc. and 1200dpi when scanning pre-screened artwork.
If you have installed, and are using the .icc profile correctly, Dot Gain will be compensated for within Photoshop when you convert and view your image.
If you have installed, and are using the .icc profile correctly, GCR and TAC will be set within Photoshop when you convert and view your image.
For information the TAC should not be more than 240%.
With Coldset Offset litho printing, NO heat or other drying assistance is used therefore, ink levels above the recommended 240% will result in set off and other press related problems. The Printsure Preflight check will reject all files over the specified limit.
Workstation Monitors must be calibrated to obtain the best results.
The best way to adjust images is to scan at the required resolution in RGB mode, with a calibrated device that embeds an icc profile. This scan when opened in Photoshop will enable full use of colour management when opening the image.
Guidelines for reproduction and supply of digital material for gravure magazines
Please note that failure to follow these guidelines may lead to reproduction errors.
Our production process is built up in a 4-colour CMYK mode. Thus all colour and tone staging are matched to the print colours in the supplied digital data. A corresponding print result, within the tolerance customary to the industry, can only be attained if these preconditions are fulfilled.
The advertiser is responsible for the correct composition of the digital material.
General:
The reproduction colour space is CMYK, whereby the colours are processed in CMY and K is used only for key, modulation and contrast. (Data defined in RGB/Lab is not processed)
Do no apply spot colours.
Please avoid a strong UCR and GCR construction as this can lead to a unexpected print results
Exceptions:
Images with fine patterns can result in moiré for instance with herringbone and glencheck patterns.
Black types used in images for instance on packaging should also be avoided. Please make this in thin colour line work with an over proportional black overprint.
Delicate structures / images with fine structures, as well as too high a sharpness of detail, can also result in moiré. Often this is not noticeable in proofs.
The maximum dot area is 340%. This is why we recommend to use 360% in the separation profile. We have put similar profiles at your disposal.
The first shade to be visible is 5% per colour channel.
Technical shades and fonts should be defined with at least 7% per colour channel.
Over/underfilling:
Dark colours should be made with an overfill of 0.06 mm.
White out letters on dark backgrounds (4c) should be defined wider in the sub-colours.
Black frames are to be defined with 0.06 mm overlap.
Black text must be defined so that it overprints 100%.
At pure black changes (text versions) there must be no colour constituents in the line work. I.e. coloured text, logos and background colours are to be incorporated into the CT.
The selection of the type and size of the text font must be adapted to the gravure printing process, taking the print fit into account.
0.2 mm for lines in single and multiple colour
For white out texts we recommend to keep at least 0.25 mm line width.
Extremely thin type faces and serifs can result in a bad presentation of the texts in the print.
